A Nurse With a Vision Supporting Bedside Caregivers
Tammy Downs, RN was working in the IMCU at the Medical Center of South Arkansas in Eldorado, where one of the patients under her care had multiple different IV lines. She explains, “I tried to put tape on them for easy identification and taped tongue blades to the bed rail to keep the tubes off the floor, but it was still a tangled mess. I thought, there has to be something to make this easier.”
At home that night, she noticed that her husband’s pill box kept his different oral medications in order. Why not take a similar approach to the IV tangles she had to work with every day in the IMCU? Tammy fashioned the first Easy View mock-up out of an empty toothpaste box, cutting slots out of cardboard and fastening them to the box.
Easy View was born – and today Tammy’s idea is helping nurses identify and separate the IV tubes that are such an important part of the care they receive. Faster and safer, Easy View fulfils Tammy’s vision.
